Like the majority of us, allergies are a common malady in both humans and dogs.  Allergic reactions may occur from food, air, and on the dog's skin.  Humans take some over-the-counter medications for their allergies and your veterinarian could prescribe that same medication for your dog, but it is best that you know first what to look for and then visit your vet and allow him or her to make the diagnosis and prescribe the medication that is best suited for your dog.

There are four types of allergies that could possibly affect your dog:
Flea allergies
Inhalant
Contact
Food

Meticulous flea and contact allergy control is mandatory if you want to eradicate this disease and suffering from your dog.  You may not know that most dogs are nebulously disturbed by fleas, but those that suffer from allergies may have an allergic reaction when bitten.  A dog with an allergic reaction may chew a part of their skin raw and cause a great deal of suffering for themselves and their owners.

Should your dog have a food allergy it will be difficult for your vet to diagnose because there is no diagnostic test?  Your vet may want to have your dog abstain from certain foods that you may be feeding him; to see if that is causing the allergic reaction in addition to providing other treatments.  After ruling out flea allergies, your vet will probably put your dog on a food elimination diet, which you can prepare at home providing you have both time and resources, otherwise you can purchase a commercially prepared dog food with a prescription from your vet.

The same allergens that affect most of us also affect our dogs like Inhalant allergies, such as grass, ragweed, dust, pollen, mold, trees, etc.   These are airborne allergens and would be described as being inhaled by your dog and your dog gets itchy skin instead of sneezing and sniffling.   Not only is the allergen inhaled but is in contact with the skin.

Keep a close eye on your dog and if you notice persistent scratching or licking and chewing an area of skin until it is raw then it is time to visit your vet to discuss some options to help your dog to feel more comfortable.
